Days of Steam manages the difficult trick of being a railway game that is different from other railway games. Players have a selection of track tiles to lay, but no board—together the tiles build up a network of tracks and cities. Laying tiles earns players coal which they need to move their locomotive around the network.
Players score points by collecting goods cubes and delivering them to the correct destination. The game challenges players to manage their hand of tiles, their stock of coal, the movement of their locomotive and the interconnections of the network simultaneously.
